How is your Hero working to make the world a better place?
At 70 years old, Ruth Messinger refuses to slow down until pursuing global justice becomes a core expression of American Jewish life. As president of American Jewish World Service (AJWS) over the past 13 years, she has turned a small Jewish nonprofit into a robust human rights organization that: supports over 450 grassroots groups developing innovative solutions to poverty in 32 countries; sends over 400 Jews on service-learning programs each year; produces dozens of thoughtful educational resources on Jewish values and global citizenship; and mobilizes thousands to advocate for policies that advance social and economic justice. Under Ruth's leadership, AJWS's most effective campaigns have united Jewish communities of all denominations and engaged the unaffiliated. Ruth has also fostered interfaith dialogue and coalition-building in response to the earthquake in Haiti, the raging conflict in Sudan and global hunger. Remarkably, Ruth's tenacity only intensifies as more Jews partner with her in pursuit of tikkun olam.
