Tell us about your nominee. Why should he or she be recognized as a Jewish Community Hero?
Rabbi Lipner has revitalized the young Jewish
community in Toronto through his innovative approach to Jewish
learning. In creating the organization "The House," hundreds of Jewish
youth and young adults have re-explored their connection to Judaism and
have strengthened their Jewish identity. The interactive and
experiential nature of "The House" is truly unique. Its environment
provides a non-intimidating and open platform for Jewish youth to
question, connect, explore and reflect. Its programs range in form and
include social gatherings, volunteerism, couples' classes, notable
speakers, and workshops. Rabbi Lipner, through his humility,
leadership, and vision, created a space to explore Judaism that is fit
for the 21st century.
What problem did your nominee identify in the community that needed to be solved? How has your nominee's efforts made a difference for others?
Unfortunately today's youth find it
increasingly difficult to find a place that helps them connect to and
explore their Jewish identity. Synagogues can be intimidating and
school classrooms may not be engaging. Rabbi Lipner has provided a new
space that encourages exploration and provides a comfortable and
welcoming environment.
Rabbi Lipner has affected hundreds of Jewish youth and young adults,
notably those ages 18-28. This cohort often finds itself on the cusp of
adulthood and with it - responsibility. If it be through beginning a
family or carving out a life path, there is renewed curiosity as to how
Judaism fits in the mix. Rabbi Lipner and "The House" have created
a place where these important questions can be explored.
