How is your Hero working to make the world a better place?
Idit has grown Keshet from a tiny, mostly-volunteer organization run out of her apartment to a major Jewish institution with national scope. Her vision of combining local community-building programs with national change-making efforts has brought about tremendous awareness of the issues facing gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Jews. Her work has energized individuals and institutions to make the Jewish community a more welcoming and affirming place for all of its members and provided tools and training to make this vision a reality.
How has your Hero impacted your life and inspired you?
Idit inspired me to see that a huge project -- changing the shape of Jewish the community -- is achievable if you set out to touch hearts and minds one person at a time. She taught me that I can be an activist by organizing Shabbat dinners and talking about my beliefs over coffee, and have just as much of an impact as the person waving a flag at a rally. Idit embodies the value of leading by example, and fighting for what's right even when it's not easy.
