David Pinkus
Toronto, Ontario
How is your Hero working to make the world a better place?
Mr. Pinkus is making a difference in the world by devoting every day of his life for the past 32 years taking on the responsibility of looking after the Kiever Synagogue and maintaining it as an historical site. He makes himself available any and every day to anyone who needs to visit the Shul, booking Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and weddings, and keeping services running on a weekly basis. He takes the role on as if he was a fifty year old in mid-career. He has basically devoted his life to this Shul and takes immense pride in its historical beauty and its place in our urban Jewish culture. He has kept generations bound by keeping the Kiever Synagogue alive. I can't think of anyone else with such dedication so as to devote himself so selflessly to preserving his synagogue. His love for his Shul has enabled it to remain active to this day. He asks for nothing in return for his hard work and dedication. It is all done out of the love and pride. Simply put, it is a source of nachus for him.
How has your Hero impacted your life and inspired you?
David Pinkus has had a profound effect on my life as a Jew and community volunteer. He has inspired me to stick with a worthy cause at all costs. He has given me the gift of a Shul that I now love as well. He has taught many with his wisdom and touched others through his kindness. People are in awe of him and he has earned the respect of all who know him. He is definitely my Jewish Community Hero.
