Daniel Raccah

Chicago, Illinois

Tell us about your nominee. Why should he or she be recognized as a Jewish Community Hero?

Rabbi Raccah works tirelessly not only for his congregation but for the disenfranchised and economically challenged of Chicago's Jewish community while striving, as a talmid of Chacham Ovaida, to be a true example of a Talmud Chacham.

What problem did your nominee identify in the community that needed to be solved? How has your nominee's efforts made a difference for others?

Thanks to his efforts, a synagogue edifice, for Chicago's Sephardim, stands tall on Touhy Avenue. He has worked to improve the delivery of social services to Chicago Jews in need. When I was unemployed he personally saw to it that my family had grocery store gift cards to put food on our table. He has also made sure that Ashkenazic synagogues have Sephardic siddurim available for those who might want them and has created the "Sephardic Sunday" program in our city to help our community be more aware of their distinct heritage within Klal Yisrael.
