Amy Shapiro

New Orleans, Louisiana

Tell us about your nominee. Why should he or she be recognized as a Jewish Community Hero?

Amy Berins Shapiro is a young 30ish mother who raises three little children alone, and yet manages to organize, help out, cook, and direct event upon event in the New Orleans Jewish community. She tirelessly and unselfishly volunteers, always cheerful, always with an accepting demeanor. She takes every opportunity to make the Name holy in the world, nekadesh et shimcha ba-olam. She does what Wordsworth called the best parts of a good person's life, the small unremembered acts of kindness and of love. She is an unsung hero, like many others. But Iremember. And so should you.

What problem did your nominee identify in the community that needed to be solved? How has your nominee's efforts made a difference for others?

Being a witness to this righteous behavior brought me nearer to G'd and made me a better person. If she did this to me, she did it to others; Jews and non-Jews alike. As such, she shows that no act of chesed is wasted, it creates a ripple with no logical end.
